Keep Calm and Control Costs in 2018. The UK has been a country of uncertainty in 2017, fuelled by the drip-drip of 24-hour news. On a macro level it seems that 2018 will see more of the same: Brexit, terrorism, politics, economics and much more besides. Melvin was asked to provide some thoughts for The Caterer magazine about the likely themes an issues for UK hotels in 2016. His optimistic side was dominant, click here to see the article. Dear Prime Minister ... The hospitality and tourism sector creates sustainable jobs that cannot be exported, within the country's vibrant service sector. Melvin participated in a round table discussion organised by the Institute of Hospitality prior to the 2015 General Election. For the resulting article, published in Hospitality magazine, click here. Melvin collaborated with Wordsmith & Co, The Institute of Hospitality and Horizons to create Hospitality Digest 2014, a pdf publication of facts, figures, and original articles providing a comprehensive profile of the UK hospitality industry. During 2013 Melvin was interviewed on Bloomberg TV several times by Francine Lacqua on topical hotel industry issues. In December Melvin discussed the background to the Hilton IPO, the most successful public markets fundraising in hotel industry history on the morning after the offer was priced. In November he discussed Luxury Hotels and The Dorchester Collection and in August the topic was Accor's change of CEO and the company's strategy. Hospitality Today header In an article for Hospitality Today in December 2013 Melvin recapped supply changes in the hotel sector and put them in a wider industry context, considering the rise of branded budget hotels, online bookings, review websites and rising operating costs. Branding and Franchising are the major themes in 21st Century hotel development. In the British Hospitality Association's Trends and Developments 2012 Melvin discusses the issues behind this trend, the statistics and main players, and where it might all end up. The hotel industry will grow but it will look very different in 2031 with more branded hotels, more budget properties and fewer independents.
